WS Cards of the Day – 08/18/14

Finally catching up with things on the site, it was a long weekend. To start off the week, we have a preview from every set coming up.

WS_KLK_S27_TE05

Analysis: The trial deck level 2 that costs 1 stock. The first ability is a climax combo that gives this card +4000 power and salvages a character which is very strong in a trial deck. The second ability is an encore effect that clocks you one card but keeps this card alive. A solid 7500 power at level 2 with the climax combo is actually very strong in a trial deck.

Straightforward Thoughts, Marika
NK/W30-079 R CH
Blue Level 1 Cost 0 No Trigger
Power 2500 Soul 1 <Police> <Key>

[Auto] [(3)] When you use the 「BACKUP」 of this card, you may pay cost. If so, choose 1 of your opponent’s characters whose Level is higher than your opponent’s Level and put it in the waiting room.
[Act] [Counter] [B]BACKUP 1000, Level 1 [Discard this card from hand to the waiting room]

Analysis: At first glance, this card seems like a very weak level 1 backup that only gives 1000 power and still costs 1 stock. Upon further inspection, you’ll notice there is a conditional first ability can be game changing. It is very much an anti change/cheat ability. Paying 3 additional stock allows you to send a character that is higher level than your opponent’s level to the waiting room. Of course the ability is expensive and very conditional, but this kind of a tempo loss can blow out a deck that most likely used 3 stock in order to change into a level 3 at the cost of their level 2. It’s honestly a solid two to for one in the best case scenario, and a +1000 power backup at the worst. Chances are, you’ll see this card in most blue decks taking up some of the backup slots.

Raku’s Fiancee, Marika
NK/W30-070 C CH
Red Level 2 Cost 2 Trigger 1 Soul
Power 10000 Soul 2 <Police> <Key>

[Auto] [Discard a character card from hand to the waiting room] When this card is placed from hand to the stage, you may pay cost. If not, put this card in the waiting room.

Analysis: A level 2 that costs 2 stock, not too exciting at first, but then you get a quick peek at the base 10k power and see a fairly strong common. The drawback is to discard a character card from your hand to the waiting room, but that isn’t all that bad given you get a level 2 for 2 stock. The downside is of course there are probably better cards to play than a 2 soul beater at level 2, but one has to remember some decks want to go straight beatdown.

Long-awaited Reunion, Marika
NK/W30-065 C CH
Red Level 1 Cost 1 No Trigger
Power 6500 Soul 1 <Police> <Key>

[Auto] CHANGE [(2) Discard a card from your hand to the waiting room, put this card in the waiting room] At the start of your Climax Phase, you may pay cost. If so, choose a 「Raku’s Fiancee, Marika」 in your waiting room and put it in the slot this card was in.

Analysis: One of those level 1’s that cost 1 stock and sit at around 6500 power. The change makes it slightly better but this requires more slots in your deck to run. Admittedly, a level 2 10k power can be a blowout in some cases, but that won’t work in every single game and at a total cost of 3 stock, there may be better things to do.

“Eighth High Group” Yousuke
PQ/SE21-05 C CH
Yellow Level 2 Cost 1 Trigger 1 Soul
Power 2500 Soul 1 <Junes> <Headphone>

[Auto] When you use the 「BACKUP」 of this card, reveal the top card of your library. If it’s a <Junes> character, choose 1 of your characters in battle, and that character gains +1000 Power for the turn. (Put the revealed card back where it was)
[Act] [Counter] BACKUP 2500, Level 2 [(1) Discard this card from hand to the waiting room]

Analysis: Quite an interesting backup card that can give up to +3500 power at level 2 for 1 stock. Although the first part is fairly conditional, if you run enough cards from this set, you’ll probably be able to get it the majority of the time.

Stage on! Kyousuke
LB/WE21-03 R CH
Yellow Level 3 Cost 2 Trigger 1 Soul
Power 10000 Soul 2 (Traitless)

[Cont] If there are 6 or more climax cards in your waiting room, this card gets -1 Level while in your hand.
[Auto] This ability activates up to once per turn. During the turn this card is placed from hand to the stage, when the damaged dealt by this card is canceled, put the top card of your library in the waiting room, and deal X damage to your opponent. X equals 1 + that card’s Level. (Climax cards are considered level 0 for this effect. Damage cancel can occur)

Analysis: This card is possibly the strongest card we’ll see in LBCM. A level 3 that can be played at level 2 in some cases makes for a compelling case to be played already in yellow. The second ability is also very strong as it not only shoots on damage cancel, but it can shoot for more than 1. Talk about late game power. If LBCM continues to get cards like this, LB will probably move up to be a top tier deck.

Girl of “Magician of Justice”
DC3/WE20-02 R CH
Yellow Level 0 Cost 0 No Trigger
Powre 2000 Soul 1 <Magic>

[Act] BRAINSTORM [(1) Rest this card] Flip over the top 4 cards of your library and put them in the waiting room. For each climax card revealed this way, search your library for up to 1 <Magic> character, reveal it, put it in your hand, and shuggle your library.

Analysis: What can I say other than possibly one of the best possible tutor brainstorms in the set. A level 0 that costs nothing and has a brainstorm ability to look for Magic characters is amazing in the DC set and is sure to further develop the consistency of any DC deck playing Magic characters.
