Budget Warrior – Developing the Angel Beats Trial Deck on a Budget (Part 2 – Music Deck)

A few weeks back, we looked at building a budget oriented deck from the Angel Beats trial deck. This week, we’ll continue to build on top of where we last left off after replacing our vanilla characters from our deck and modify it to a more powerful and focused deck. The build we will focus on this week is the Music deck, which is the Angel Beats theme deck I played at the WCQ a few weeks back. So without further delay, let’s get to deck building.

yui_abPreamble

OK, sure, buying the booster box is more fun, you may get some of the expensive staple rares and you get more cards out of the deal. Heck, you may even get a signed card out of the deal. So, why would you ever consider buying singles if opening a box sounds so much better? The main answer to me- consistency, so let’s break it down to see what I’m talking about. If you open a box, you’re not ensured cards you need and if you open a playable rare or double rare, you’re mostly likely to get one at most. Buying singles, on the other hand, is going to ensure your going to have the best available amounts of key cards (while keeping it under budget of course) to make your deck as consistent as possible.

So for this exercise, what is budget? As you could have guessed, it’s ~$53 USD (a booster box from AmiAmi is 5620 JPY) and we’ll be not counting the price of our Trial Deck and using ideal808 for the pricing for the cards we add.

Looking at the Deck

Before we go about replacing cards, let’s take a look at where we last left off:

Deck 1 – Music Deck

  • 2x AB/W31-T01 Friendly Combination, Sekine & Irie
  • 2x AB/W31-T02 Big Fan of GiDeMo, Yui
  • 2x AB/W31-T03 Charisma Vocalist, Iwasawa
  • 2x AB/W31-T06 Girl Known as “Angel”, Kanade
  • 2x AB/W31-T07 2nd Generation Vocalist, Yui
  • 2x AB/W31-T10 “Madona” Yui
  • 2x AB/W31-T11 Tenshi’s Mabo Tofu
  • 4x AB/W31-T12 Operation Tornado feat. Yui
  • 2x AB/W31-T13 Fujimaki & Ooyama
  • 2x AB/W31-T14 Thinner in Clothes, Takamatsu
  • 2x AB/W31-T15 Baseball Boy, Hinata
  • 2x AB/W31-T17 Releasing Oneself, Takamatsu
  • 2x AB/W31-T20 Just Like Sisters, Kanade & Yuri
  • 4x AB/W31-T21 Battle with Shadows
  • 1x AB/W31-T22 Model Student, Kanade
  • 1x AB/W31-T23 Yuri’s Powerful Draw?
  • 2x AB/W31-T24 Otonashi & Kanade in Winter
  • 4x AB/W31-004 Yui’s Sex Appeal or 4x AB/W31-060 Yuri’s Invitation to the Battlefront
  • 2x AB/W31-062 Yuri’s Fearless Gaze
  • 4x AB/W31-022 Always Energetic, Yui
  • 2x or 4x AB/W31-009 Cool Beauty, Iwasawa
  • 2x or 4x AB/W31-110 “Crow Song” Iwasawa

For the music deck, you could be spending anywhere between $8.90 to $18.40.

With what we see above, the first thing we should do is to decide on what cards we should be playing from the or categories. It’s quite clear we should be playing Yui’s Sex Appeal (AB/W31-004) as it fits in our Music deck much better than  Yuri’s Invitation to the Battlefront (AB/W31-060). The next thing we’ll have to deal with is making sure our deck is consistent, we should really cut some of these random 2-ofs that we have in the deck. The cards to go that don’t fit into our theme are listed below:

  • 2x AB/W31-T06 Girl Known as “Angel”, Kanade
  • 2x AB/W31-T11 Tenshi’s Mabo Tofu
  • 2x AB/W31-T13 Fujimaki & Ooyama
  • 2x AB/W31-T14 Thinner in Clothes, Takamatsu
  • 2x AB/W31-T15 Baseball Boy, Hinata
  • 2x AB/W31-T17 Releasing Oneself, Takamatsu
  • 2x AB/W31-T20 Just Like Sisters, Kanade & Yuri
  • 2x AB/W31-T10 “Madona” Yui
  • 4x AB/W31-T21 Battle with Shadows
  • 2x AB/W31-T24 Otonashi & Kanade in Winter

With this, we will need to replace 18 cards. 4 of which are climaxes and the rest are characters.

To begin, we’ll replace all the level 0 characters with something that would make more sense with our Music theme. The cards we’ll be removing are 2x Fujimaki & Ooyama (AB/W31-T13), 2x Thinner in Clothes, Takamatsu (AB/W31-T14), and 2x Baseball Boy, Hinata (AB/W31-T15).

The first card we’ll be adding is Sekine Loves Pranks (AB/W31-107).

ABW31-107CSekine Loves Pranks (AB/W31-107) becomes an instant 4-of in any Music deck just because of its ability. The ability to discard a card and pay one stock to send this memory and tutor for a Music character when this character is reversed makes this one of the best cards to have in a Music deck. The fact that this is on a level 0 that doesn’t cost any stock makes it an easy include in your deck over some of the level 0’s that don’t even fit the theme of our deck. -$3.00 from budget.

Our next card is the premier brainstorm-er in any Music deck, Powerful Performance, Irie (AB/W31-E108).

ABW31-108CAs we’ve stated in the past, Brainstorm is a powerful mechanic as it allows you to both compress your deck and activate for relevant abilities. The ability on this card is especially relevant in a Music deck, being able to both compress and tutor for Music characters at the cost of 1 stock and 1 card is something your deck really wants to be doing at almost any point in the game. This becomes an easy 2-of, since we don’t need too many Brainstorm abilities in our deck. -$1.80 from budget.

With our level 0 replacement out of the way, let’s take a look at our level 1’s. At level 1, we’ll be replacing 2x Girl Known as “Angel”, Kanade (AB/W31-T06), 2x Tenshi’s Mabo Tofu (AB/W31-T11), and 2x Releasing Oneself, Takamatsu (AB/W31-T17).

When it comes to our level 1’s, we should look at replacing our two level 1 backup cards. To do this we’ll be adding in Song I Wanted to Sing (AB/W31-E048).

ABW31-048UAlthough this card may not be a character, it provides an interesting event backup option at level 1 for 1 stock. This card gives +3500 power which should give you the edge in almost every single battle. -$1.50 from budget.

One card that becomes an easy include in almost every single Angel Beats deck because of its utility is Kanade Sending Everyone Off (AB/W31-E001).

ABW31-001RRThe primary reason to play this card is the first ability. It gives all your other death characters hand encore, you can discard a character card from your hand to encore a character. We’ll just include 2 of these into our deck since they really do push our deck over the top when it comes to power. Of course, the downside is that you’ll be spending quite a bit to obtain these cards. -$19.00 from budget. (Yeah, this is steep, but worthwhile.)

For the last 2 level 1’s that we were going to replace, we’ll leave the slot for additional level 3’s since we only have 2 from the trial deck.

Next in our level 2 slot, let’s replace 2x Just Like Sisters, Kanade & Yuri (AB/W31-T20). We’re also going to get rid of 2x “Madona” Yui (AB/W31-T10) entirely as it doesn’t do enough at level 2 and pushes our card count too high.

ABW31-110C ABW31-009RReplacing the two level 2’s is easy, we can just bump up both Cool Beauty, Iwasawa (AB/W31-009) and “Crow Song” Iwasawa (AB/W31-110) to both be 4-ofs. -$6.60 from budget.

When it comes to level 3’s, we only had 2 in the trial deck to begin with. To start off, let’s bump this number up to 4 and see where we can go from here in a later article. Let’s get rid of our 2x Otonashi & Kanade in Winter (AB/W31-T24).

Finding a level 3 to fit our deck is easy, as we only have one real choice if we plan to play Change. Realizing a Dream, Yui (AB/W31-E011) becomes an auto four-of in our deck.

ABW31-011RThis fits easily with our Change and also gives us a lot of power at level 3. The heal is nothing to laugh at, on top of possibly being a 10500 power level 3 if you have two or more Music characters in your memory. The last ability is a powerful buff with the climax combo giving all your characters +3500 power until end of turn. -$7.60 from budget.

Lastly, we’ll get rid of our 4x Battle with Shadows (AB/W31-T21) climaxes.

Again, this is easy, we’ll just play the card that climax combo’s into our level 3 for Change and gives a buff as well. Memories of Gldemo (AB/W31-E050) is an easy include into our deck.

ABW31-050CRThe standard 2 soul triggers, and a climax that draws you a card, and gives a character +2000 power and +1 soul until end of turn. The climax combo is quite strong though, given how you can use it to change into your level 3 at level 2 and also buff your other characters while doing so. -$6.00 from budget.

With our changes that leaves us with the following deck:

  • 2x AB/W31-T01 Friendly Combination, Sekine & Irie
  • 2x AB/W31-T02 Big Fan of GiDeMo, Yui
  • 2x AB/W31-T03 Charisma Vocalist, Iwasawa
  • 2x AB/W31-T07 2nd Generation Vocalist, Yui
  • 4x AB/W31-T12 Operation Tornado feat. Yui
  • 1x AB/W31-T22 Model Student, Kanade
  • 1x AB/W31-T23 Yuri’s Powerful Draw?
  • 4x AB/W31-107 Sekine Loves Pranks
  • 2x AB/W31-E108 Powerful Performance, Irie
  • 2x AB/W31-E048 Song I Wanted to Sing
  • 4x AB/W31-E050 Memories of Gldemo
  • 2x AB/W31-E001 Kanade Sending Everyone Off
  • 4x AB/W31-E011 Realizing a Dream, Yui
  • 4x AB/W31-004 Yui’s Sex Appeal
  • 2x AB/W31-062 Yuri’s Fearless Gaze
  • 4x AB/W31-022 Always Energetic, Yui
  • 4x AB/W31-009 Cool Beauty, Iwasawa
  • 4x AB/W31-110 “Crow Song” Iwasawa

After everything is said and done, we actually went over our limit a little, and we’re now at the $58.80 mark. At first, I had considered removing a card or two to lower the budget, but we’re only $5.00 or so above our budget and consistency is key. One thing I’d remove if we were to stick to our budget would be Kanade Sending Everyone Off (AB/W31-E001). These two cards alone cost us $19.00, but there is a reason this card sees play in almost every Angel Beats deck. In terms of our deck, we are pretty far removed from our trial deck and there are still some changes that need to be made to make this deck more competitive. One good thing is that our consistency in our deck is much higher, this gives us a deck that is easier to work with and makes our chances of drawing impact cards much higher. In our next article, we will finish off our Music deck and turn it into something even more consistent.
